After watching the video my whole mindset changed about what motivates me and where i get my drive from. I think money still plays a big part in my motivation to perform well at each gig and it should, because i believe im only remembered for my last event and not the ones before it or the upcoming ones. The fact that i am my own boss im always on autonomy mode. I always strive to be the best at what i do, and determine to get better each day. My purpose and goal is to make others feel the happiness and excitement i have when im Djing and make sure they have fun, because if they don't then i feel like im not doing my job and i have failed them and myself.

Motivation: What Drives Us?
Being a DJ and owning my own small business i thought i had motivation squared away, but a couple of days ago i questioned what is motivation to me. I thought i knew what makes me motivated, but after watching this video by RSA titled "Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us" changed everything. I always thought that money makes the world go round and it probably does to most people. The video states that when people are asked to do simple straight forward physical task, for instance running the longest distance or eating the most hotdogs in 20 minutes, they will perform it to the best of their ability if the money is right. So pretty much the better you perform the more money you will get, but on the flip side, what happens when money is not an issue. What i mean by that is, what if the money is already there and it doesn't drive them perform better work. The Monetary incentive is gone. What will motivate them to go above and beyond? In the video they mentioned three things to motivate the non-money motivated people, they were autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Autonomy is being able to be your own boss and do things your way and mastery is plainly trying to be the best at what you do. Lastly purpose is what you strive to accomplish and obtaining your goal.

That video was interesting! I agree. It was ironic how things turned out to be with performance and money.
ReplyDeleteLittle suggestion: maybe put the paragraphs in smallers chunks! :)
Ariz - your post reminds me that learning isn't necessarily about gaining new information. Learning can be about incorporating knowledge into our own lives. Learning can also be about finding language that makes us understand what we already know in a deeper way. It sounds like the video helped clarify your beliefs about how you conceive of and apply motivation into your own life. How encouraging it is to read that what we do in class actually has "use value" in your "real life." Hooray!
